Central Wyoming is known for its very broad, wide-open spaces and a relatively small population of people. As such, this is a great part of the state to camp if you want to experience nature and not have to deal with big crowds or locals.

Unfortunately, the only state park in central Wyoming does not allow overnight camping. Still, there are plenty of places to camp outside of the state park. Glampers and RV enthusiasts might enjoy Casper East RV Park, which features showers and electricity. Fort Caspar Campground would be a better choice for those who want to rough it, as this campground features 109 tent sites as well as places for RVs to park.

Things to do in Central Wyoming

Casper is the main area in Central Wyoming where visitors can find fun things to do, both outdoors and indoors. If you plan on visiting in the wintertime, you could enjoy a day of snowshoeing or skiing along Casper Mountain. During spring and summer, there are usually festivals going on around Casper. Fishing, watersports, and swimming are popular activities at Alcova Reservoir.

At Edness Kimball Wilkins State Park, visitors can enjoy several miles of hiking trails that overlook the stunning cottonwood trees that are native to the area, as well as the wildlife-rich riparian area that is open to the public.

Places to visit in Central Wyoming

The main state park in central Wyoming is Edness Kimball Wilkins State Park, which is located just six miles from Casper. Unfortunately, there is no overnight camping allowed at this park, but it is an excellent place to visit during the day. Visitors to Edness Kimball Wilkins State Park can enjoy everything from birdwatching to fishing along the North Platte River. If you've never seen flying fish before, you simply must stop by this state park on your trip.

Casper Mountain is a must-see as well, where visitors can enjoy biking and hiking. Fremont Canyon is another must-see destination with jaw-dropping rock walls and miles of easy-to-moderate trails. If the outdoors isn't your thing, you could one of Casper's many museums. The Nicolaysen Art Museum features stunning artwork, while the Tate Geological Museum provides insight into the ancient animals that once lived in Central Wyoming.
