Welcome to Tentrr Camping in West Virginia Mountaineer Country

John Denver sang about the West Virginia mountains as “almost heaven”, and that’s what you’re going to find when you camp in West Virginia’s mountaineer country. A region near the West Virginia University (where the mascot is the Mountaineers), this region encompasses Morgantown, Fairmont, Clarksburg, and Bridgeport--and all of the glorious mountain paradise that fills in the areas surrounding these towns.

For Mountaineer Country campers who want to hit the water, try Tygart Lake in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. There’s little you can’t do on and in this lake, from your regular boating and waterskiing, swimming and fishing, to even great scuba diving! You probably never expected to find scuba diving in the heart of West Virginia. The deep waters contain walleye, crappie, musky, perch and bullhead catfish. And there are 40 campsites with running water.

If you’re looking for Mountaineer history, stop by Lost Creek, West Virginia, where there is a restoration of a 53-acre historical homestead, with log cabins, period buildings, and activities in the summer depicting life from 1796 to the early 1900s.

But if you really want that “almost heaven” mountain experience, visit the Coopers Rock State Forest, about 13 miles from Morgantown. Camping, picnicking and scenic overlooks are everywhere, plus there’s 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, sandstone cliffs for climbing and bouldering, and a lake full of trout. A camper’s paradise!

If you’re into geocaching, the rangers keep 14 official cache sites well maintained for adventurous campers, but who knows how many other geocaches you can find left behind by the campers who came before you.

So if you’re looking for somewhere to “take you home down country roads”, then the Mountaineer Country of West Virginia is the perfect camping getaway for you.
