Southern Vermont is definitely the most naturalistic area of Vermont. It boasts beautiful scenery, gorgeous views of the Battenkill River and the Taconic Mountains near Hildene. Southern Vermont has a rich war history as well, making it great for outdoorsy types and history buffs alike.

A majority of the state parks in Southern Vermont offer free camping accommodations, though the smallest parks like Townshend State will have a limit on people per campsite. Lake Shaftsbury State Park offers furnished cottages on the lakefront for an inexpensive glamping experience. Molly Stark State Park in Wilmington offers plenty of camping options for trailers as well. Merck Forest and Farmland Center is another great spot to visit for hikes and glamping, as the farm offers rustic cabin lodging.

The state parks in Southern Vermont are unique in that they offer a ton of rental options, including kayaks, rowboats, canoes, pedal boats, and more. You definitely won’t be bored during your stay, no matter where you choose to settle!

Things to Do in Southern Vermont

If hiking is your thing, Southern Vermont is probably the best area of the state to visit. National forests, parks, and small towns in Southern Vermont are covered with many different types of trails. An easy trail to try would be the 2.2 mile out and back trail on Freedley Quarry along Trail 6 in East Dorset. This lovely trail is fairly easy while also offering the opportunity to watch wildlife. A slightly harder trail would be Prospect Rock Trail, a three-mile out and back trail situated near Manchester Center that follows a river. A bigger challenge would be the Stratton Mountain Trail via Long Trail in Green Mountain National Forest. This eight-mile trail has a lot of traffic, but it also boasts gorgeous wild flowers and allows dogs.

If you’re more of the resort type, there are many different resorts with waterparks in Southern Vermont. These include Stratton Mountain Resort, Magic Mountain, Smuggler’s Notch Resort, and Lake Morey Resort.

Places to Visit in Southern Vermont

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most popular places to tour is the Lincoln Family Home located in the Gardens at Hildene. In Bennington specifically, there are many different Revolutionary War history tours that one can take, such as the Bennington Battle Monument.

Southern Vermont also has a wide range of state parks and forests to visit. These include Townshend State Park, Emerald Lake State Park, Jamaica State Park, Fort Dummer State Park, and Lake Shaftsbury State Park.

Honora Winery and Vineyard near the Green Mountains is a must-see, as this 200 acre vineyard offers incredible views. The George Aiken Wildflower Trail in Bennington is a great option if you want to enjoy the outdoors but don’t want to take on a heavy hiking trail.
