In many campsites, you’ll be surrounded by towering mountains and you can go on hikes beside the tall sequoia trees.A camping trip with family in this region is truly one to remember. Check out below our recommendations for High Sierra Camping:

For getting out on the water, Spicer Lake offers kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. With majestic granite boulders topped by cedars, Jeffrey Pines and Ponderosa Pines, this is a gorgeous place to start a high sierra camping trip.

Sunset Magazine named Bass Lake as one of “The West’s Best Lakes”, and it’s no surprise why: camping at Bass Lake itself is gorgeous, but it’s surrounded by beautiful forest and things to do. With a marina for boat rentals you can get right out on the lake for either speedboatting. You can paddleboard and kayak. You can mountain bike, hike, and climb. The first weekend in May sees the Bass Lake Fishing Derby, where two grand prize fish each win $10,000 prizes. And the Bass Lake Yosemite Triathlon, features swimming, biking, and a 5k run. And if you’re lucky during all of this you’ll catch a glimpse of one of the many bald eagles.

And if you want the adventure of backpacking, but don’t want to haul the gear, the High Sierra of California offers High Sierra Camps where you can hike long distances into the backcountry and rest in luxury with good food and nice amenities.

The High Sierra may be remote, but it’s not an uncivilized wilderness: there’s so much to do here all in a level of comfort that you don’t typically find outside of the city.
